#1. Diet: The food we eat has a profound impact on our moods, so we should eat foods that support our mental health (see our article on bipolar friendly foods.) However, to summarize its content: ►Include a diet rich with fresh fruits and vegetables. ► Avoid eating sugar and grains. This will help to stabilize our leptin and insulin levels. ► Do include eating healthy fats which promote brain functioning. It is highly recommended that we take supplements which have high-quality animal based fats like omega-3 fish oil tablets. Omega 3 is packed with natural antioxidants which help to fight depression.
#2. Vitamins: Vitamins also play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy body and brain. ► Maintain vitamin D levels to keep depression at bay. A deficiency of vitamin D exacerbates depression. ► Try to get outdoors as much as possible and get plenty of sunshine to maintain Vitamin D.► Vitamin B-12 assists our neurological function and red blood cell formation. It maintains a healthy metabolism, which regulates our energy and helps our ability to concentrate. (This is especially important if you also have been diagnosed with ADHD like me.) ► Some alternative medicine practitioners recommend vitamin B-12 shots to combat depression because of its quick, mood-elevating effects. (It is particularly helpful if you are experiencing mixed episodes.)
