Protests, Teargas, Adult & Child Mental Health

I just received the following useful information from Central Health, a psychiatry practice based in Duddel Street, Central. The clinic is offering free workshops and a wealth of information and support concerning preventative measures you can take to protect your own mental health and the mental health of your kids. Please take a moment to read it.

At Central Health we have been fortunate to be able to provide our usual service to our patients despite the city wide protests.  We have however noticed increased emails and phone calls about the effect of teargas and the impact of continued unrest on children’s mental health.

In the spirit of prevention always being better than cure we have put together adult and youth information leaflets on how you can help yourselves and your children minimise the stressful effects of the current conflict.

At the request of some of our parents, our child development team have also organised workshops to help parents, children and teenagers manage the more difficult consequences of the continued unrest.  Workshops are free and preference will be given to central health patients.

We have also had many requests for stress/anxiety related consults from our family doctors, adult/child psychologists and psychiatrists. Fortunately, the increased demand has coincided with the arrival of two new psychologists from the U.K. and Canada bringing our total number of mental health practitioners to thirty-seven.  It is clear some of our patients are navigating mental health support for the first time and need more help.

If you are unsure who would be most appropriate therapist or what would be the most helpful strategy, please either ask/email your usual Central Health doctor, or contact:

Emma our Australian Registered Nurse who trained in mental health nursing in Sydney.  She is the adult mental health team coordinator at Central Health.
amhc@centralhealth.com.hk

Odile our Clinical Care Coordinator for our Child Development team who is a Masters trained Paediatric and Adolescent advance practice nurse.
ccc@southside.com.hk

Both are incredibly knowledgeable about mental health support, both within and outside Centralhealth.

For those concerned about teargas exposure particularly pregnant patients please see our information sheet.
